Matilda Jane Trunk Show and Mini Sessions Spring 2010 | Raleigh Child Photographer

I'm hosting a Matilda Jane Trunk Show in my home on March 5th from 10am-12pm!

Matilda Jane has THE cutest stuff for girls--perfect alone during the summer or layered in the winter. I got to see the new line in person last weekend, and I love this collection. Please check out the lookbook to see some sneak previews.

Matilda Jane is not available in stores, so if you're interested in coming to my house for the trunk show, email me and I'll send you an invitation. Kids are welcome! If you aren't able to come to the trunk show, but you'd like to order from a catalog, let me know and I'll get you connected to the right person.

I'll be doing a mini photo session for your child if you spend $75 on Matilda Jane clothing at the trunk show! The mini sessions will be held on April 16th (times and location TBA). Each mini session will last 15-20 minutes and will feature your child, decked out in her new Matilda Jane duds and will include one 4x6 print! Digital images are not included. You will have the option to purchase prints at the regular price, listed on my website.

Please note that this mini session is for your child only. If you'd like to schedule a regular family session, please contact me and I'd be happy to schedule something with you.

Wow, it's hard to believe it's a new year and I'm just now doing a blog post! For those who have asked, despite not posting since December, everything is fine : ) I've been busy working on a brand new blog (coming very soon!) and making some much needed updates to my website (still in progress). I have many blog posts to catch up on and I hope to make many of them on my new blog very soon!

I actually thought I had posted these a couple of months ago, but with the busyness of holiday sessions and editing, it just didn't happen. These are a few images from my trip to Japan (in July!). I was so excited to spend some time with my sister, Joanna, and her boyfriend Victor. They both live in Japan, and despite it being a fantastic country, I am really looking forward to them both moving back to the US this year.

I only got to see them for a couple of days, but we made the most of it with some good food and some late night karaoke. We visited the Studio Ghibli Museum, which was so cool. I would never have expected a museum to have real Miyazaki sketches plastering the walls with no glass around them. It was as if there was no concern that they might get damaged or that someone might steal one. For those who are unfamiliar with Miyazaki's films, please check them out. This is a random thought, but I have to say that I think Miyazaki (and his studio) might give more attention to wind than any other animation studio. It's really beautiful to watch in his films.

We traveled to Lake Ashi, where we rode on a pirate ship and saw Mt. Fuji. Nearby, there was a beautiful cedar forest that we walked through. That night, we stayed in a traditional ryokan that Victor had booked. It was so cool to be able to sleep in a traditional Japanese hotel instead of a more touristy one. It had an onsen and also included a Japanese breakfast.

Oh--here's a tidbit of advice for anyone traveling to Tokyo. Go to one of the large department stores before they open and go in as soon as the doors are unlocked. We walked in and all of the employees were lined up down the aisle of the department store. Every single one of them bowed as we walked by. It was almost overwhelming and surreal, but such a neat experience. If you go later in the day, don't expect to see this. Even if you can't go in the morning, it's worth going to the department stores just to check out the food halls. They're amazing (and expensive)!

On to some photos!

Many parts of the museum reminded me of Gaudi's Casa Batllo in Barcelona.

This is right outside the little cafe at the Studio Ghibli Museum. I just loved the little detail of the tiny pinecones next to the vase of unripened blackberries on the red chair. So whimsical : )

This is a Mont Blanc, which is carried in most Japanese department stores in their food halls. It was Jacob's favorite dessert in Tokyo when we were there in 2005. It would never be my first choice, but I had to get one in his honor : )

Mary + David | Raleigh Wedding Photographer

Mary and David got married on a beautiful morning in Raleigh, North Carolina, at The Angus Barn. The weather was perfect, and so were all the details at the wedding, from the gorgeous flowers and antique typewriter to the southern ham biscuits and mac n' cheese. It was so sweet to see Mary and David with the pre-ceremony nerves that everyone gets--even after being together for several years. Watching them throughout the day, it was clear that they were meant to be together and that their happiness will continue to grow in the years to come.

Last year was Talah's first year trick or treating, but this year was the first year she was looking forward to it and really understood that candy would be coming her way. Oh, how excited she got! She was thrilled to be a mermaid princess and loved her tail. She even started singing a song about Halloween that I've never heard before. I think she was making it up : )
Here's Jacob after he put fake blood on himself and approached Talah. She knew it was him, so she wasn't afraid. I liked how she looked pretty innocent in the second picture, as she adjusted her crown, but immediately in the next shot she whirled around and tried to whip him with her necklace strand. You can see it start to encircle his staff. By the way, Jacob loves Halloween and also loves scaring kids. He chased some (older/sassier) kids in our neighborhood and rarely has he looked so elated.

Okay, I'm finally getting around to posting the Beijing pictures. Where does the time go? After this, I'll post pictures from Japan--hopefully with less of a lag between posts!

The first picture you'll see here is the Beijing airport. I was in Beijing in 2005 and I can attest to the huge difference between then and now. This is an amazing airport. Truly.

We had a bit more free time in Beijing than in the other cities and one of the things that I wanted to do was a sidecar tour. My parents had done this in Shanghai and had such high recommendations, that I had to try it. The company is Beijing Sideways and you can do tours of varying lengths and in different locations. The commonality is that you're on a motorcycle with a sidecar and you can ride on the back of the motorcycle or in the sidecar (or alternate, which is what I did). I might have felt rebellious, except my parents were the ones who told me to do it! This method of transport allowed us to weave in and out of traffic and go down some narrow alleys and into the hutongs of Beijing. You'll see a few pictures below.

Here I am, looking awesome (not). My contacts ripped the first day I arrived in Asia so I had to wear my glasses the whole time, which was sort of a pain since I don't normally wear them all day and hold my camera up to my face--to be met with glasses.

I loved this girl holding the rooster. I wanted to get closer, but we were riding and I took the only shot I could get.

All cards can be personalized with different text, additional text, different fonts, etc. I can also change colors in most of them.

I can hardly believe Halloween is almost here. And that means Thanksgiving is right around the corner! It also means this is a very busy season for us photographers because people want to get their sessions done for holiday gifts and cards. Hence, the Holiday Mini Sessions.
I have to thank Erin for lending me her gorgeous settee for the mini sessions. I think it was such a great addition to the shoot and was well worth the drive to Hillsborough to borrow it. Thank you SO much, Erin! You have great taste (not just in the settee, but in your whole house, by the way)!

Jenny and Jon had a lovely intimate wedding in Raleigh, North Carolina. They wrote their own vows, which were so sweet and heartfelt. And they each had the officiant read some words of thanks they wanted to share with their families and friends. I was especially touched by what Jenny had said about her mom.
The reception included lots of dancing, a delicious almond cake from Edible Art Bakery, and strawberry daiquiris : )

Lizzy + Josh | Raleigh Wedding Photographer

September 25th was the perfect day for Lizzy and Josh's wedding. The weather was gorgeous, the venues were idyllic, and the whole wedding party (Lizzy & Josh, 9 bridesmaids, 9 groomsmen, and 5 kids) looked amazing. There were some beautiful and fun elements to their wedding, such as the invitations by Dapper Paper (check out their Etsy shop--very cool stuff!) and the bird and feather details in Lizzy's bouquet, the boutonnieres, and the guest sign in area at the reception. All the groomsmen wore Tom's shoes. Lizzy walked down the aisle to The Arcade Fire's, "Wake Up." When I heard the song start, I was thinking, "No way! How cool is that?!" Ultimately, though, I think the most important part of the wedding to Lizzy and Josh was being able to honor their faith through the ceremony, and it showed. After the ceremony, the entire wedding party walked through downtown Raleigh to get to the reception, where they feasted on elegantly served comfort foods like macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, and mini chicken pot pies before enjoying italian ice, wedding cake, and lots of dancing.

So, if I was late in posting Talah's birthday pictures, I would certainly be late in posting pictures from my trip to Asia in July. I'll break this into three posts because there are a lot : ) This was in every way a business trip, but I did have small pockets of time here and there to do some things and I definitely took advantage of that. How could you not?

The first stop was Shanghai. There wasn't much free time here, but I did bring my camera with me when I went to lunch and walked around. We also went to the Expo one night, which was pretty amazing. The creativity exhibited there is just out of this world! I had heard that people who went during the day often stood in lines for 6-8 hours just to get into one pavilion. When combined with the sweltering heat and massive crowds, I can't imagine that would be much fun. We were there at around 8pm when the crowds had died down (but there were still PLENTY of people there) and the heat was more bearable. You can see more below.

This is at the Expo. Can anyone explain this to me?

These are some of the exhibits we saw at the Expo. We only went in Mexico, Spain, and Norway because of time constraints, but it was fun just to see them from the outside to appreciate the fantastic architecture and lighting. The one below was Chile.

These were on the wall in Mexico. There was a whole room filled with art displays by Mexican artists.

We ate dinner in the Mexican Pavilion. I was tempted to get the "Evil Spicy Shrimps."

The picture below is not a good one. There's way too much stuff going on in the foreground with the railings and umbrellas. Unfortunately, there wasn't anywhere else to stand. Still, I had to show how cool the UK pavilion was. It was closed.

I can't remember which pavilion this was, but I loved how the ceiling looked like undulating seaweed. Unfortunately, I could only see it from the outside because the line was too long.

Switzerland is below. The netting had red plastic balls sewn in.

Spain was one of the few pavilions we were able to get into. I was very impressed.

The beginning had a movie going on all the surrounding walls. It started with the running of the bulls and then turned to soccer. They also had bones hanging from the ceiling.

This wasn't a big part of the exhibit, but I loved how creative they were in using hanging string as a projection screen.

They also had a huge animatronics baby, which attracted a lot of attention.

Below is Norway. It had beautiful wood details throughout.

Talah's Birthday | Raleigh Child Photographer

Let's pretend I'm posting this much closer to August 6th. Oh, poor Talah. That whole shoemaker saying rings true sometimes : )

We celebrated Talah's birthday with family in Orlando and it was such a fun day. It included family, pool time, dinner at Boma, lollipops, cupcakes, and balloons. One word about Boma for people who don't know. This is one of the restaurants at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. They have a nice buffet and you can walk around the impressive lodge and see animals on the property (giraffes, gazelles, zebras, etc.). If you can't or don't want to go to Animal Kingdom for a whole day, this is a nice place to go to get a taste of things on a much calmer level.

The koala bikini Talah is wearing below is kind of a family heirloom. For some reason, my youngest sister Joanna had it for a long time, even though it's been a couple of decades since she could wear it. I suppose since she was the last Summers girl to wear it, it was hard to let go : ) I was excited when Talah was finally big enough to wear it! As for the pettiskirt, Talah loves it and puts it on whenever possible--especially if someone comes over to our house. She'll disappear for a few minutes and come back out with her "pretty dress" on to show our company. I told her that she could wear it all day on her birthday. And she did.

Sometimes I get annoyed when my lens fogs up from the humidity, but in the image below I didn't mind it.

Let me explain what you're about to see. I read in a parenting magazine a few years ago about someone whose tradition growing up was to have lollipop seeds. Here's how it works. You get "seeds" (any seed-like item will do: sunflower seeds, jellybeans, grains of rice, etc.) and tell your child they are lollipop seeds and then you plant them together. Later, which could be the same day or weeks later, you put big lollipops in the yard for your child to find so it's as if they lollipops have sprouted up.
Okay, so this is all technically a big lie to tell your kids--but it's fun, right? Talah and my niece, Leah, loved it and I think we'll keep it up for years to come.

The anatomy of a birthday wish : )

I had to include this picture. Sure, the kids are cute and all, but the reflection in the glass is what is really funny to me.

Happy Birthday, sweet Talah! Yes, you are sometimes willful and know a thing or two about time out, but most of the time you're pure spun-sugar. I couldn't be happier to be your mom.

Jackson + Peyton | Raleigh Baby Photographer

Do you remember these sweet things? What a difference six months can make! We did their six month session recently, and it was really fun to see them again and see how big they've gotten. I think they look so much alike (duh, they're twins) and yet, Peyton is distinctly feminine and Jackson seems to be all boy and it shows--even at this very young age. They just about killed me with the hats. So cute!

This is my friend Andrea. Andrea had talked about how big her hair was when she brushed it out and one day last summer, she brushed it out to show me. I told her we needed to take pictures of her like that, and a few weeks ago, we finally did.

Enso and Talah at the Springs | Raleigh Children's Photographer

I'm very behind in blogging right now, but I'll try to catch up as best I can soon! These are a few from our trip to Florida over the summer. Talah got to play with her cousin Enso a little bit, as you'll see below. They literally have natural springs right in their neighborhood. How cool is that? It was so fun (and funny) to watch Talah and Enso play together because everything can change so quickly when you're three years old. One minute the two of them were fighting over the placement of their kids' table when they were eating (they were each pulling it towards themselves, like a couple fighting over a blanket), and the next minute they were having a blast taking turns turning off the light and tucking each other in and pretending to go to sleep. It was definitely entertaining.
I have more to share from our Florida trip soon, as well as client blog posts : )

Don't worry. It's not as high as it looks. Only a few feet off the ground--I promise!

He's gonna be a little heartbreaker!

My sis-in-law, Laresa, had these awesome books with illustrations by Friso Henstra. Also, I love this blanket because it's been in my family since I was a child and was our picnic/beach blanket. Before that, it was my Aunt Kay's and actually started out on her bed!

Happy Birthday to Jacob

"Who's that?"

That was the first thing I said after seeing Jacob for the first time way back in high school as he walked down the hall. We had a few encounters before we actually started dating. The first time I had a chance to talk to him, he was in trouble (such a rebel!) and was sitting in the math department near my mom's desk. I offered him some Cheeze-Its and he politely turned me down. That was the end of that encounter. The second time, I offered him some pizza on the way to a party with mutual friends. Again, he turned me down (geez, I needed a new strategy!). But that time we had a chance to talk and ended up talking in the corner most of the night. Now, a little over eighteen years later, we're married and have a daughter. It was hard to see into the future back then, but I'm pretty sure we knew.

Happy birthday to my best friend in the world. I love you!

And to show something Jacob and our friend Brandon did for my Mother's Day/birthday present, take a look at the wood wall they created below. I had seen a cool scrap wood wall online and asked if Jacob could do one for us. I didn't anticipate the amount of work that would go into planning it, making all the cuts, staining and putting up each individual piece before the two of them actually got started. It was a beast, but I think it looks great. Are they happy with the way it turned out? YES!!! Would they ever do it again? NO!!! In fact, Jacob and Brandon wrote a hate note to the wall on the back of the last piece of wood they put up. But--come on--it's cool, right?

I was driving to Wilson and was just about to get off the exit when I heard it. It was a sound I'd only heard in movies, but I knew it wasn't good. I started to slow down to hear it better and then heard a loud POP! I'd gotten my first flat tire. Here I was, about to do a photo session and I was stranded on the side of the road. Things weren't looking good for the session at that point. Thankfully, Lynne came to my rescue and picked me up so that we could do our session in downtown Wilson. What lifesavers!

Thank you for saving the day and for such a fun session!!

PS: Jacob drove out to meet me afterwards and changed the tire for me. After having watched him, I feel like I could do it if it happened again...but I wouldn't welcome the opportunity : )

Virginia + Jordan Wedding | Destination Wedding Photographer

Virginia and Jordan are married! I was so excited to photograph their wedding, because I knew it would be a fun day--and it was! I photographed Virginia and Jordan's engagement session only a few weeks before the wedding and really enjoyed seeing how funny, goofy, and loving these two are.
The wedding took place in Black Mountain/Montreat, just outside of Asheville. There were many personal touches that day, with many of the decorations being made by Virginia, her mom, and her sister, Clare. Some of the flowers came from Virginia's mom's garden. Clare made the cones (made from maps!) that held flowers and adorned the doors throughout the reception area. Virginia's mom hand painted the sunflower for the "guest book." Jordan's family raises cattle and they brought all of the meat for the reception--over 300 pounds of it!
There was lots of dancing at this wedding, which was very entertaining. But perhaps the most entertaining event was seeing the guys decorate the getaway car and surprise Virginia and Jordan with water guns. Scroll down to see what happened : )

Lay Flat Albums | Raleigh Portrait Photographer

I am often asked about albums and what they look like. And, really, there are so many choices and possibilities that it's hard to do them justice! I always have good intentions about taking pictures of albums, gallery-wrapped canvases, portfolio boxes, etc. before they leave my hands and go into yours, but it rarely happens. I took these images months ago and am finally posting them : )
These are just a couple of examples of some of the lay-flat albums that I offer. The cover options are many, but the images below show a metal cover (image printed directly on metal) and a ripple glass cover (first page of the album can be seen under the glass cover). These are really special albums with a definite wow factor. The pages lay flat when open so that the image isn't interrupted. The spine is leather and they come wrapped in beautiful paper packaging, as seen below. Other cover options include fabric, leather, vegan-friendly pleather, smokey glass, wood, photos on canvas, and more.
If you don't have much wall space, need a gorgeous gift, or just want something different for yourself, albums are a great way to go! I also offer press-printed books and will post some images of those soon : )

Holiday Mini Sessions 2010 | Raleigh Family Photographer

It's hard to believe how fast this year has been going by. Believe it or not, it is time to start booking your holiday mini session! Contact me right away to secure your place!

But first...
Is a mini session right for you? Mini sessions are best for those who have already had a full session recently and are simply wanting some updated photos for holiday cards and gifts (and for your own home, of course!). Because of the shorter session, wardrobe changes are not possible during a mini session. Those wanting a full session (approximately 1 1/2 hours) at a location of your choosing should contact me to book a full session.

This year I'm planning two mini session dates because of demand and I will use a different location for each.

Here's the scoop on the minis:

Times: 9am-12pm (sessions are scheduled on the hour and half hour)

Times: 1-5:30pm (sessions are scheduled on the hour and half hour)

I'm super excited to shoot Virginia and Jordan's wedding TOMORROW! I can only imagine how excited they must be that tomorrow is the big day.

Virginia is the sister of my great friend, Clare. The day of this session was only my second time meeting Virginia and my first time meeting Jordan, but it was so easy to see how much fun they are, how goofy they are, and how crazy in love they are. Jordan is so funny and was constantly making Virginia laugh. He's also really down to earth. And Virginia is what I think summer would look like if you bottled it up, with her perfect smattering of freckles and golden tan. Plus, (Virginia, don't kill me) she had a bunch of bruises and scrapes on her legs like a little kid. And who walks into the woods, down a semi-steep path into a creek barefoot? Virginia.

Can't wait for tomorrow!

H-Rin looked beautiful in her gown and I do so love birdcage veils : ) It was so sweet to watch her tear up when she saw her dad and feel the emotion of the day. The whole wedding party also knew how to have fun and everyone let loose on the dance floor with DJ Mike Morse.

Back in April, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Simply Bloom Workshop. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I'm just now getting around to posting the images because things have been crazy! I've been a huge admirer of Christine's and Vania's work, so when the workshop opened up, I simply couldn't miss it. If you haven't visited their site, you're in for a treat. They are so creative and have a true gift, as well as the blessing of being to work together as best friends. It was fantastic to be able to learn from these two who are so talented and so sweet. If you are a photographer reading this, I would definitely recommend that you attend the next workshop that opens up!

Mackenzie loves, loves, loves her momma. It was very cute. She also enjoyed seeing some of the pretty plants and a tiny egg shell from a bird that had hatched. Here is my sweet girl wearing Matilda Jane. Talah loved running around with her friends at the location for the mini session, eating sugar cookies, playing with the tea set, etc. And she was THRILLED to have her nails painted. Tory painted them and Talah talked about it every day for the next week, even after the polish had come off. I can remember being similarly excited about nail polish when I was a child. There's something magical about it to kids (adults, too, I suppose!).

Rich and Elle were married at The Aquaduct in Chapel Hill, NC. It couldn't have been a more gorgeous day--and the location was gorgeous, too, as you'll see below. I was, again, fortunate to be second shooting for the wonderful Michael Moss.
Rich is from England, so there were fun touches throughout the day, such as the tea that was served as the bridal party got ready. They also incorporated some really personal touches, like special songs that were sung at the ceremony by family and friends. They wrote their own heartfelt vows, which had the wedding party in tears. All in all, it was a lovely day and ceremony : )

Talah's Quilt

If you have emailed me recently, you probably got an auto reply from me about our recent move. Things have definitely been a whirlwind because it all happened so fast--all the way from deciding to simply look at houses to quickly selling our home to moving into our new home. Even in early February I didn't imagine we'd be living in a different house...yet, here we are. What a difference a few months can make! The whole moving process has slowed me down a bit in terms of blogging (amongst other things!), but I'm getting back in the groove.
We've still got unpacking to do and lots of decorating, so I won't share any pictures of the house right now, but I did want to share a few pictures of Talah's new quilt! With the move came the discussion about whether or not we should move Talah from her toddler bed to a "big girl bed." We decided to take the plunge. Talah is now in a real adult bed and she's actually transitioned extremely well. In fact, it's the bed Jacob had built out of picnic tables for his brother when he lived with us (Hi, Phillip!).
To go with her bed, we got her a custom quilt. The quilt was made by Sarah Miller from Blue Barn Quilts on Etsy. I actually used Alchemy to find Sarah. If you aren't familiar with Alchemy, it's a feature on Etsy where you can put in a custom project/product that you want and sellers will bid on your job. I had several bids and I'm SO glad I went with Sarah. She was fantastic throughout the entire process. She had excellent communication and she sent me pictures along the way so I could see how the quilt was coming along. She is so nice and very talented and was able to do the exact pattern I wanted. All I did was choose my fabrics and I had them shipped to her. She took it from there. If you want to have a quilt made, you should absolutely get in touch with Sarah. Working with Sarah has been, by far, my best Etsy experience. Be sure to visit her Etsy shop!
I'll share pictures of the full quilt once Talah's room is done. Sarah's work is impeccable!

The top two bundles are the fabric scraps I had requested in my Alchemy request and the bottom two are quilts. I'm hoping to practice sewing and I might as well have some cute fabric scraps to use!

These were her 12 month pictures and I was so thrilled when her mom said she wanted to bring a pettiskirt for her to wear in some of the pictures (I love pettiskirts). Doesn't she look adorable?

Cassidy, my sweet friend Tory's daughter, turned four! For her birthday celebration, Tory threw her a Princess Pancake party. All of the girls came dressed as princesses and had a pancake feast and then had their faces painted by Snow White. It was the perfect party.
I've blogged about Tory before, but feel I need to point out how talented she is. She has an Etsy shop (Shade That Lamp) where she sells her lampshades. She can custom make lampshades in the fabric of your choice and it can completely change the look of a room. She also does interior design and has a real gift for combining colors and patterns and figuring out the best way to use a space. She also finds really gorgeous and unique items to use in a room (for example, you should see the antique mirror she found that is now the headboard of her bed!). Definitely get in touch with her if you would like her to help make your space more functional and beautiful!
The face painting was done by Face Painting by Jandy & Co. She was fabulous and dressed as Snow White. She posed with all of the girls together and also with each girl individually (well, the ones who wanted to!).
I have to share a funny story about Cassidy. Tory told me that Cassidy was talking about Mother's Day recently. She knows how much Tory loves chocolate, but she also knows that Tory loves God. So, Cassidy told Tory that for Mother's Day, she wanted to get Tory a "Chocolate God." I thought that was hilarious.

Isn't Tory's kitchen/dining area so pretty and cheerful? That's one of Tory's lampshades, by the way.

Talah's first face painting! We had tried over Christmas and she didn't want to do it, so I was excited to see her sit still for it this time.

Not even ten minutes later, Talah had already smeared it while playing in the water. No surprise to me!

You'd better believe I'm going to keep snapping away if a child will let me. Doesn't she look like an angel?

This beautiful wedding took place in Charleston, SC, which is such a gorgeous location for weddings. I was second shooting for Corbin Gurkin, whose work I just love, love, love. Oh, and you should check out her house that was on Design Sponge!
Cece and Christian's wedding had a lot of beautiful, personal details that I'm so happy to see cropping up in today's wedding. For example, all of the bouquets were wrapped with handkerchiefs that Cece had found (the lavish colors and textures of the bouquets were inspired by Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette). All of the table numbers were handmade by Cece with found objects and papers. The veil was Cece's great Aunt's. The icing design on the cake was inspired by the veil. The list goes on! I think it's a good example of ways to personalize your wedding in a creative way.

Alicia and Chris were married at Fearrington House in Pittsboro, NC. It was an intimate gathering and everything was beautiful and personal. Between Alicia and Chris, they have three children, all of whom were involved in the ceremony. I love it when people involve children in weddings : ) In this one, the kids stood at the alter throughout the ceremony, participated in the readings, and even helped light the unity candles. It was lovely to include them and, I think, showed the kids just how important they are in this union.

Without further ado, here are a few photos from the day.

I took the picture below through a window with old panes of glass. I love how the distortion in the old glass make natural swirls and blurs, especially in the trees. This was the view from the room at dinner.

Michaela and Gerry | Raleigh Wedding Photographer

I had the pleasure of second shooting for the fabulous Michael Moss (he does awesome and amazing work) for this beautiful wedding. It was filled with pretty things, lots of love, laughter, and some tears--as all wedding should be.

It was so sweet to see Michaela get emotional anytime something made the day seem "real" for her as she was getting ready. She couldn't even watch as her dad opened her gift to him (see below). His reaction was equally sweet. When some of the embroidery from the handkerchief was showing at the top of his pocket, someone asked if he planned to tuck it in so the letters wouldn't show. He responded, "I'd wear it across my chest if I could."

Michaela and Gerry's love for each other was genuine and it really showed. I think the groom's sister (who was also the best man) summed it up best with her toast, "Being in love is like peeing your pants. Everyone can see it, but only you can feel the true warmth."

Meet JD | Raleigh Newborn Photographer

This sweet baby is who we were waiting for at this maternity session. I don't often photograph newborns when they're awake because they're much harder to pose, but JD was ready to be awake at the end of our session and he seemed pretty content to pose for a few more, as you'll see at the bottom. It turns out that the Christmas Cactus you see in the last picture was given to Libby's dad when he was in the hospital and Libby has had it since he passed away almost 28 years ago. Libby told me that it has bloomed at Christmas time throughout the years, but that it hadn't bloomed for several years. It bloomed the week that JD was born. In March. I thought that was pretty amazing. The train in that picture belonged to Libby's grandfather.

It's always nice when you can go out shooting with another photographer and just have fun. That's what Julie Lindsey and I did. Her niece, Priscilla, was so funny and sweet. Her look reminded me a lot of Taylor Swift (especially in the 4th photo). Actually, when I was taking some of the last ones shown in this post, she was reminding me of Hayden Panetierre. And in the second to last photo, she reminds me of Claire from Lost. By the way, imagine I'm saying "Claire" with an Australian accent, like Claire's mum : ) So, perhaps we could just agree that she's versatile? And, obviously, extremely photogenic.

Talah's Room: Crime Scene | Raleigh Children's Photographer

This is what I woke up to this morning. You know when something happens and you aren't expecting it and you're so confused that your mind fills in the blank with explanations? That's what I did. I heard Talah on the monitor saying, "Mommy, look at my toes!" As this is not something she normally says, I decided to go in. I walked in to what honestly looked like it could be a crime scene. Talah stood on her mattress, face and hands covered in red. At first, I thought, "Is she bleeding?!" Then I realized she was standing there smiling, so that wasn't likely. Was someone else bleeding in here? No, of course not. Duh. That takes me back to college when someone had broken into my car. I didn't know what had happened until I sat in the driver's seat and saw wires hanging down where my stereo had been. For a moment, I stared dumbly, wondering if I had somehow left wires hanging out in my car. In this case, it just took a moment for my eyes to wander over to the limp bag of frozen raspberries. It sat crumpled, looking ashamed for what it had been accessory to that morning.

Okay, let me rewind. Last night, I was trying to get Talah in bed and we were going through her whole "routine." I strayed from the routine a tiny bit because my friend Tory was waiting for me in the living room and I felt bad about taking so long. Talah did not appreciate straying from the routine. She got upset and started crying and accidentally walked into the bed and hit her head. I got the bag of frozen raspberries because she wanted something cold on it. I put them on the dresser by the door so I wouldn't forget to take them out of the room. Clearly, I forgot. By the time Talah woke up, they were nice and thawed. And juicy.

Sigh. Well, it looks like it is coming out of the carpet. The sheets and pillow cases are another story and we'll have to see.

By the way, Jacob was a real saint this morning. He was very forgiving when he found out all of this happened because I had left the bag of raspberries in there. I can't say I would have been as understanding if our positions had been reversed. I'm sure I would have questioned him to the death. So thanks.

Sorry for the poor quality of the above picture. I was in a hurry and just went ahead and used on camera flash since it was so dark in the room. I'm not sure if the picture fully shows just how messy everything was.

Our paths crossed many times over the course of 5 years before we actually met. We'd attended the same youth group, I'd seen his band perform, had many common friends but it wasn't until one Sunday morning after church (V21) that we were formally introduced to each other. Our first date was awkward as we were the only people dining in a Chinese restaurant the day after Thanksgiving. However, we immediately knew there was something special developing. He was my first kiss. I was 25.

We were engaged on Good Friday and married in September. Our wedding cake was topped with a lego Han Solo and Princess Leia. We honeymooned in England and had a baby 9 months later. We are big goofs with bizarre senses of humor, but we totally get each other.

In 2001, as a graduate student in neuroscience, Michael hired me to work as his assistant. Every morning, we put on our lab coats and fed mice, recorded data and did analyses over coffee. He began to bring muffins, and I would linger in the lab and tell him my aspirations to get into grad school. Do you know that person who you can't wait to tell the funny or sad story? He became that person to me.

I'm not sure if I was drunk on delicious muffins, but one day in the lab I told Michael I loved him. At the time we were dating, but it was early in the relationship. He told me that he loved me back. In 2005, he proposed to me at a neuroscience conference. Fitting, right?

In the past decade, Michael has been my mentor, my friend, my husband and soulmate. Now we spend our free time scoping out bargains at the grocery store, bickering about scientific studies and taking our pets to the vet. We hug and kiss each other, but these moments are never captured on film. Please choose us—the perpetual, fun-loving geeks — for the photoshoot!

Michael Clayton and Victoria Wood

More than likely, if you were to see us out on a date, you would think to yourself “hmm interesting.” Without going into too much detail, Victoria has four citizenships, she has lived in four countries, she is directly related to two men who were knighted by the Queen (that’s right, they have the title “Sir” permanently in front of their name), and her family in New Zealand has a lengthy Wikipedia page concerning them. I was born and raised in Wilson, NC. The end.

She came to NC State to study Fashion design (she has the prettiest, best sense of style) and I came to study Natural Resources Management (I wear plaid). Victoria and I enjoy going for walks around Lake Johnson together; we enjoy cooking dinner together, and making each other laugh. She took me whitewater rafting for my birthday, I gave her pretty things on hers, and I am taking her to go see Cinderella at the Carolina Ballet for Valentine’s Day (Shh, don’t tell her). Our relationship is beautiful in that we give to each other sacrificially in time, love, and laughter; it is this continuous giving to each other that makes life without each other unimaginable.

I'm so thrilled for our great friends Tina and Dave on the birth of their sweet baby boy! Jack is their first child and, as you can imagine, they're completely in love with him--as they should be.

Dave called us from the hospital that night and told us how the delivery went. He said that before he called us, Jack held his finger and they just looked into each other's eyes for twenty minutes. I said to him, "Isn't it the greatest thing in the world?" He responded, "Yes. There's nothing outside this room right now." I thought it was so sweet and completely sums up the way we feel as parents. Congratulations, Dave and Tina! We're beyond happy for you : )

It's that time of year. The stores are flooded with all things pink and red. Hearts are everywhere and commercials blast reminders to men (flowers! diamonds! chocolate! spa packages!). Hearts are on every card and it seems completely appropriate to go buy yourself a cupcake...or two. Restaurants are booked solid. Yes, it's the season of love.

In honor of just that season, I'm pleased to announce the All You Need Is Love Contest!!!

One lucky couple will win a FREE photo session and three high resolution digital files. Digital files are normally only sold as a full set for $1200, so this is a value of $1350!!!

Here are the rules:

-In 200 words or less, email me the reason why you are a unique couple. What makes you tick as a couple? What are your favorite things to do? What are you passionate about together? Are you fun? Are you opposites that attract? Do you finish each other's sentences? Tell me!

-Include the couples' names and contact information (email, phone, address)

-Attach a photo of the two of you together in your email

-Submit your entry by Friday, February 12th at 5pm EST

I will announce the top three couples by 3pm EST on February 14th. Then it's up to YOU to vote on the winner!

Voting will end on February 21st at 5pm EST. The winning couple will be announced on February 22nd.

Rhyanne was my roommate at Rollins while we were getting our MBAs. She put up with a lot of my quirks and weird ideas and "projects," and I'll always feel indebted to her for that. I feel like I learned a lot while in school, but I often got distracted by other things (some legitimate--like the business I was running with my sis-in-law--and others not so legitimate, like making bracelets, watching Felicity, etc.). Rhyanne, on the other hand, had her head on straight.

I remember one day when I was making a bit too much noise while getting my breakfast ready. You see, I went through a phase where I would take Nature's Valley granola bars (the kind with the green wrapper) and crush them up to make cereal for breakfast. Yes, I know you can buy granola cereal but I truly thought what I was making was delicious (and I'm sure I'd still think so now if I tried it). I would crush it each morning on the kitchen counter with a full wine bottle because it was accessible and heavy. Poor Rhyanne finally came out of her room one morning, after I had woken her up, confused about why I was always hammering in the kitchen every morning. After that I always took the granola bars to my room to smash them : )

Now she's married (Jeff is such a great guy!) and has two beautiful boys. They all live in Nashville, which is where I was for the Imaging USA conference. I'm so happy I had the chance to see Rhyanne again and spend some time together. While I was there we took some pictures of the family on the Vanderbilt campus. Here are just a few.

Rhyanne, I hope you come and visit soon! I'll have Anne of Green Gables and Indian food ready to go : )

Visual Art Exchange | Raleigh Fine Art Photographer

If you are looking for something to do Friday night, consider going out to First Friday in Raleigh! It's a great opportunity to visit local galleries, listen to good music, and have some wine and appetizers. It starts at 6pm on the first Friday of every month.

One gallery that participates is Visual Art Exchange. It's a wonderful gallery in downtown Raleigh and I am so excited to be one of their February featured artists! I have a few fine art pieces that will be on display this month. I hope to see you there for First Friday!

Jeremy Cowart Workshop

A few weeks ago I went to one of Jeremy Cowart's workshops. If you aren't familiar with his work, you should be. Not only is he an amazing celebrity photographer, he's also someone who seeks to change the world for good--and not just through photography, but in any way he can. He founded Help Portrait and, as I type this, he's in Port-au Prince loving and helping the people of Haiti. Follow him on Twitter to get updates on the projects he's working on. Here is an image of a newly married couple he shot in Haiti. The sign reads, "Love Conquers All" in Creole.

During part of the workshop, we divided into groups and photographed a model. Our group got Kasey Reed and she was fantastic! Anyone in Tennessee looking for a model should get in touch with Kasey. She is represented by MAX|AMAX.
